Diabetes Education for Aging Adults: How Physical Therapists Can Help

Physical therapists can play an important role in diabetes education by providing older adults with education and guidance on how to manage their diabetes through physical activity, exercise, and lifestyle modifications. Diabetes education for older adults should be tailored to their specific needs and abilities, taking into account any physical or cognitive limitations they may have. This webinar will discuss the components of diabetes education, implications for physical therapists in diabetes education and self-management in aging adults.

  2. Identify diabetes education and self-management resources and tools for aging adults
  3. Appraise ways physical therapists can help provide diabetes education for the geriatric population


About The Speaker(s)

Paras Goel, PT, DPT, MEd is a board-certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist, a Diplomate of American Board of Lifestyle Medicine and Fellow of American Institute of Stress. He received Bachelor of physical therapy degree from India and Master’s degree in Exercise Science from Auburn University, Alabama and Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Texas Tech University Health Science Center, Texas. He completed a post graduate certificate in diabetes education from International Diabetes Federation and is a member of Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists. He has 15 plus years of healthcare and inter-professional collaboration experience in various clinical settings. He is involved with physical therapy community and serves as an APTA Geriatric California State Advocate, and run several interprofessional collaborative programs to support home based modifications and fall prevention. He has provided service to APTA and his local community at various levels. Most recently he was appointed on ABPTS Geriatric Council, and awarded APTA Academy of Home Health 2022 Excellence in Home Health Clinical Practice Award, and is a 2022 APTA Association Leadership Scholar.
