Bone Health SIG Update – December 2022

Physiotherapist examining a female patients knee in clinic
BH SIG    December 14, 2022

Happy December! On behalf of APTA Geriatrics Bone Health SIG, please receive this wish for you and your family to have Happy and Healthy Holidays!

It has been a busy year with a focus on building a Bone Health toolkit. This resource will include guidance for evidence based screening, evaluation and interventions for your patients/clients with osteoporosis and compromised bone health. If you questions or ideas for contributions, please contact our project manager Lisa Hamilton @

In response to the recently published documents supporting physical therapist management of patients with Osteoporosis (available from our website), there is collateral work being done to provide a Knowledge Translation with resources for both clinicians and patients.

On January 17, our SIG will be hosting the first 2023 the Academy Journal Club presenting Effects of Pilates Exercise on Bone Mineral Density in Postmenopausal Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (JGPT June 2022) with a collaborative case from Sherri Betz PT, DPT, CEEAA, NCPT. Register here and tune in for an informative evening beginning at 8 pm eastern. And look for Sherri’s article in the January GeriNotes reviewing her case presentation.

CSM is just around the corner. Please scour the rich agendas for both in person and on-demand courses. APTA CSM | APTA . A list of courses sponsored by APTA Geriatrics can be found by using the search tool (by section) and includes preconference offerings. Don’t forget to visit poster and platform sessions and of course the member meeting scheduled for Thursday evening, February 23. Specific for Bone Health is a session by Sherri Betz “Research Update on Exercise for Osteoporosis” on Thursday 2/23 at 3-5pm, session # GR-13903.

Please look for an announcement of a virtual member meeting (via Zoom) in early March. Date/time and registration will be on the website.

In case you haven’t heard – APTA Geriatrics offers FREE Student dues for Academy membership. Tap all the students in you programs, communities and practice to join the

Academy and BHSIG! We will be looking for a student liaison in 2023 to contribute to our leadership efforts. This is a new academy wide initiative – stay tuned for more info.

Lastly, I would like to welcome Lisa Hamilton as incoming chair for the SIG. She previously served as vice-chair and now currently as project manager for our Toolkit project. Lisa brings clinical experience and enthusiasm to the role of chair and we look forward to her leadership. Lisa will begin her term at the conclusion of CSM 2023. Thank you to all those candidates who expressed an interest in serving. We would not be successful as a volunteer organization without contributions from any and all of you.
